So I watched the Emmys tonight (of course, I’m obsessed with TV so what else would I be doing?) and well.. mostly I have to say WHAT were they thinking with those hosts. Specifically, Ryan Seacrest–What would make anyone think that anyone wants to see him do anything? He is so severely smarmy and douchey. It makes me sick whenever he’s doing anything on screen. That opening was TERRIBLE and I freaking loved that Jeremy Piven called them on it in his acceptance speech.
Regardless, I’m not going to amble on and on about all the crazy stuff of the broadcast, so I’ll pare it down to some bullet points.
Things I Loved:
- The Chinese food I was eating while watching
- The Simpsons Clip
- All of the writers’ nominee videos
- Steve Martin
- The TV theme song medley
- Tina Fey!
- 30 ROCK!
Things I did not:
- The hosts
- The laugh-in tribute
- The reality host bit
Overall, not very interesting and mostly annoying, but my show came away wonderfully! Congratulations 30 Rock!!!

Friends and Frasier may have completely different premises, locales, and demographics, but their hilarity and relatively similar production dates (Frasier 1993-2004, Friends 1994-2004) will always link them in my mind. That, and I first discovered them at home in Texas, watching them in syndication back to back semi-late at night. I loved it because they were really funny, but also because my Dad would watch them with me and therefore let me stay up late! If I got really lucky I’d be allowed to stay up for “Suddenly Susan” which was also great, and now isn’t on television or DVD at all. What’s up with that? Watching that show is the only reason I knew to watch My Life on the D List, and we all know how that turned out. So, I owe it a lot.
Why are they in a show down? Well, I’ve been realizing something of late. I have my TiVo set to record both shows in syndication so that I always have something to watch, right? WRONG! When Friends get past season 7 in its syndication rounds, I am done, and it isn’t until they get back to the beginning that I care to watch anymore. Frasier, on the other hand, NEVER lets me down. Every season of that show was pure gold. From Dr. Nora to “Dr.” Mary, every episode is really hilarious. Don’t get me wrong; I’m well aware that almost every episode consists of Frasier trying to fix something he screwed up and screwing it up more in the process, but that doesn’t make it any less funny.
Also, don’t think I hate Friends or anything. Believe me, that show still has a special place in my heart. I can quote it more than any show and have a scarily obsessive memory for episode trivia. Most importantly, it gave me my sense of humor! It was also the first television DVD I ever bought, and if there’s anything I love, it’s television on DVD. I don’t currently own any of the Friends seasons on DVD anymore (they’re on TV every 5 seconds) but it still started my trend!
Speaking of TV, I’ll be watching the Emmys tonight and rooting as loud as I can for 30 Rock and especially Tina Fey! Anyone who watched the Emmys with me last year know how excited I can get for my shows. Until next time!
